It is thanks to the installation of the ARBURG Advance machine combined with the SELOGICA control that Faber has the necessary closed loop regulation system, which can be utilised to operate as a cellular manufacturing process. This delivers essential savings in terms of waste reduction. The SELOGICA control uses a flow chart analysis to allow the operator to identify on a programme when to start and end. It operates a freely configured programme to control the cycle at any desired point. This provides for sophisticated operations such as parallel functionality. The company’s ARBURG 200 tonne 2k machine is currently dedicated to product development. However, as Faber Technology is a contract moulder this machine provides for sandwich moulding, interval moulding and also two colour moulding for soft-touch applications, for example, the production of toothbrushes. The advantage here is that two different materials can be moulded onto the product/part simultaneously. This technology is welcomed in the UK market, especially in the domestic and automotive sectors, where two colour moulding is perceived as an advanced moulding application. The ARBURG 420C 1000 350 100 tonne Advance machine was initially purchased in response to spiralling energy costs. It is a hybrid machine and as such offers a number of distinct advantages. Recognised for holding a tight tolerance, these machines require low energy usage during the cooling phase. The Advance is particularly environmentally friendly (with the beneficial savings in power consumption) and is supported by comprehensive quality management systems and software.
